Alice's desires

In the midday sun...

Caroline Mercier

Alice teaches Mathematics in a secondary school.. Quite brilliant, she was among the top performers in the teacher recruitment examination, and now aged 26 is preparing final year pupils for their baccalauréat... Pupils almost her age...

And she’s gorgeous to boot... She dances, too... wonderfully, having wavered for a long time between an artistic career and Mathematics...

But Alice has a cousin, her best friend, who teaches at the same school...

One day at her friend’s house she discovers a curious pair of pliers, and doesn’t know what they are used for...

Léa, her cousin, ten or so years her senior, is shadier... She adores Alice, and would love to have her discover her secret garden... A secret garden covered with thorns so good to prick yourself on... Thorns and pliers... Which Léa puts to a very peculiar use... Even with her pupils...

Axcel Zeppegno

Rémy is one of them. He is pupil of both Léa and Alice. He knows what the pliers are for... But he has seen other pairs...

Even if at the age of nearly 20 he’s dragging out his final year of school, he is very gifted... In several ways...

His father, an American surgeon who is loaded and works in Los Angeles, has already introduced him to quite a slice of life: women, high-class parties and drugs...

It’s his French mother who brought him back to France to calm him down... And have him pass his baccalauréat if nothing else...

Léa has followed his education, though...

Léa and Rémy agree that it is perhaps now Alice’s turn to discover life... . Or their life at least...

And then it’s very touching for a teacher to be initiated by her pupil...

Trilogy

Synopsis

«Les Désirs» is the first part of «La Trilogie Amoureuse» comprising three films by Jean-Michel Hulin whose actions are linked together with gaps of years in between and revolve around recurring characters.
It is a hymn to the freedom to live out one’s desires within traditional morality, the freedom to love beyond social conventions, and the freedom to dream of being the convert author of one’s own transgressions. «Les Désirs» is a dramatic comedy, «Les Sentiments» a romantic comedy and «Les Rêves» a comedy.

The "Trilogie Amoureuse" traces the couple, or more precisely "the couples", through what are commonly called " the 3C ":

  • Le Corps (the Body) : «Les Désirs» appeals to the viewer’s "primitive" emotions, his/her drives such as erotic turmoil and fear.
  • Le Coeur (the Heart): the second film «Les Sentiments» basically deals with feelings of love, the emotions.
  • Le Cérébral (the Brain): «Les Rêves» appeals to the intellect, playing on disjuncture and humour through a self-referential comedy where things keep going from bad to worse
Cecile Calvet

The screenplay for «Les Désirs», whose plot and world belong to Jean-Michel Hulin, was co-written by Cécile Calvet, who also plays "Léa", one of the key protagonists of the "Trilogie".
